(BU TELKGBAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION.)

CHRISTCHURCH, 19th 'May The Senate of the New Zealand University met this morning, the Chancellor (Protessor Brown) presiding. When proposals for the appointment of extra moderators for the passing of .•papers for the accountants' examination' j were considered, Sir Robert. Stout strenuously protested against pilinc un expenditure. The Senate, he said was heaping np wrath against the day to come. 1 lie country could not afford the huge'expenditure upon education. The moderators were unnecessary. Mr. De La .Mare agreed with the main contention of Su Robert Stout that moderators were unnecessary, but in view of the fact that tho country could spend so much on beer *ad horse-racing \ c held that it could atlord to foot the bill od education. Sir Robert Stout: • 'Because we waste money on norse-racing {here is no reseon why we should waste it on education. . Mr. J. Caaghley of Education) suggested thai the examiner should | be asked to certify that he had person.ally worked cut th= paper... and that they could be done in the time allowed, mis would obviate the necessity of more moderators. This proposal waa adopted.
