SYDNEY 'VARSITY TEAM
The Sydney University Rugby representatives who are making a ,tour of the Dominion arrived by the Moeraki from Sydney to-day. At the wharf to meet them were: Messrs. E. Williams and E. Martin-Smith, with other University Rugby officials, and Messrs. T. A. Fletcher and A. E. Neilson, of the New Zealand and Wellington Rugby Unions respectively. Mr. H. 0. Martin is manager of the visiting team, and in conversation with a "Post" reporter he stated that this party of ' University players was well up to the' average of former teams. The forwards, he said, were very good, and the backs, though somewhat light, were nippy and fast. Ihe voyage from Sydney had been good, although some of the players had been affected by mal-de-mer. It was hoped, however, that the training to be indulged in this afternoon would prepare the team for a bright display against Victoria, College to-morrow afternoon. F. W. Smith had been included in the team in place o{ F. Munro, who broke a collar-bone on the Saturday prior to the team's departure from Sydney. "Rugby football in Sydney is much better than it has ever been," said Mr. Mai-tin in answer to a question regardins the standard of play this season. "The back play is much bettor; in fact, the standard generally is higher. In my opinion the standard is now infinitely higher than that of League." The members o; the touring team are as follow:—H. C. Hingst (captain), A. F. Pratt (vice-captain), V. J. Flynn C ODea, F. W. Smith, M. Williams, C. M'Dermoit, E. A. Newton', C. E. Tilbury, A. M. Lamport, A. G. Smith, W. A. Andrew, A. M. Johnston, R. J. Waddington, W. G. Holt, G. P. Storey, .T. Todhunter, E. R. Caldwell, W. C Hill, W. F. Wiseman, A. H. Garratt, and M. Roseiiblum.
The visitors were accorded a civic reception this afternoon by the Mayor (Mr. C. B. Norwood).
