ROME, 18th May. An impressive ceremony was performed by the Pope on the occasion of the first of the Holy Year canonisations, which will be made every Sunday during the next few weeks. The French nun, Sister Therese of the Child Jesus, was elevated to sainthood in the presence of sixty thousand spectators. An electric loud speaker was operated for the first time inside Saint Peter's, and carried the Pontiff's voice to the most distant corners of the Basilica, The dome, facade, and obelisk of Saint Peter's were illuminated with thousands of lamps, and flambeaux for the first time since 1870.
