It is understood . that all the unions, representing half a million workers, have instructed their representatives to decline the offer and to refuse any compromise on hours and conditions, and' at the same time to press for the unions' original demands. [Replying to the engineering trade unions' demands for a 20s increase, the employers submitted proposals' .to. the forty trade unions concerned suggesting increased hours in an attempt to reduce the costs'of production and to counter foreign competition. At present the men work 47 hours at Is an hour, plus a bonus of 10s. The' employers propose 50 hours at Is an hour and a bonus of 12s, the hours of night workers, now receiving time and twothirds, to be increased from 47 to 52A hours. ] • - - -
