DEFECTIVE MIND
MURDER WHILE INSANE.

Ernest Khodes (aged 18), a native of Liverpool, formerly in the service of a London firm as an actor, was to-day presented for trial on a charge of murdering Grace Blackaller early in April. He pleaded not guilty. The Public Prosecutor 3aid . that Rhodes appeared to regard Thome as a hero and himself in somewhat the same light. There had. been nothing in his demeanour since the murder indicative of insanity.
Mr. Hyslop gave evidence that Rhodes was mentally defective. Witness expressed the opinion that he was insane at. the time of the murder. Five other' doctors supported this statement.' The jury brought in a/ verdict •of guilty but insane, and the Judge ordered Rhodes to bs detained during His Majesty's pleasure. ' [Grace Blakaller left homo in the evening for the cinema. Her friends stated that she was tof an artistjc:.tem-. perament, and ■ had performed in the Christmas fairy plays. Although aged only 16, she was tall and well built. It appears that she was nearly home when attacked. She managed to crawl home, leaving a trail of blood-stains, and rous- : ed . her widowed mother, calling "Mummy, Mummy." She was taken to hospital and died. Not long afterwards Rhodes walked into the North Fulliam police station and was' charged with the murder.]
