■At a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board yesterday, Mr. Campbell Colquhon was appointed clerk of works for the new general hospital buildings Messrs. W. H. Campbell, Gordon L Giesen. D. W. Madden, and William P. \\ alker were yesterday elected as members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Major F. H. Bowater. managing director of W. V. Bowater and Sons, Ltd., of London, arrived by the Maunganui this week, accompanied by his wife and daughter. Major Bowater is a member of the Corporation of London.

Messrs. H. C. Hulme and C. de R Andrews have been elected members of the Public Service Appeal Board, as representatives of the Service. Mi- Hulme received 3009 votes and Mr. Andrews 2774. The candidate who failed to secure election was Mr. P. Fleming, who polled 1234 votes. o>

Messrs. C. M. Luke (chairman Wei-' lington Hospital Board), W. Appleton, G. Petherick, Dr. D. Macdonald Wilson (medical superintendent), and J. Coyle (secretary) were yesterday appointed to act as delegates of the board at the Hospital Boards' Conference, to be held at Auckland on the 27th inst.

The funeral of the late Mr. ■ Thomas Ryley, who for many years was employed in the tramway sheds, took place at Karori this morning. There was a large attendance of tramwaymen. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. W. Shirer, and t'jere was also a Buffalo service, the deceased havin" been a member of that Order

Mr. H. Nelson Firth, of Kelburn. who has reached an advanced age (more than eighty years), leaves by the Athenic on 27th instant on a holiday trip to England. Mr. Firth arrived in Auckland seventy years ago by the sailer Glengownie, after a voy;)jr e o f s ; x monthsduration. 'He has lived in Wellington for some years, and was well known as accountant to the Wellington Racing Club. Cn his holiday tour, he wili be accompanied by his daughter, Miss Myra Firth. ■
