AUSTRALIANS AT LINTON

HANDICAPPED OUT.

(BI TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., 18th March

The Australian athletes competed at the Linton A.A. Club's annual sports to-day. There was a record crowd, and large entries were received from local competitors. The visitors ran in a plucky, sporting spirit, but were handicapped out of the winning positions. However, a second in four events and a third in two out of the eight starts came their way. If the watches are to be believed, N. J. Grehan, the Australasian furlong record-holder, performed a great feat by running the 220 yards in 22sec, which is 1 l-ssec better time than that recorded at the New. Zealand championships by the winning competitor. Grehan started three times, including a heat, but on each occasion was beaten. C. Burness, the cyclist, added another spill to a chapter of accidents, at the finish of the mile, when he was forced by a skidding cyclist to run into another competitor. He appeared later in the two and five-mile events, showing something of his true form in the latter. L. •B. Hyde, the crack Victorian miler, started in the 880 yards and mile, securing a place each time. W. M. "Whyte was second in the quar-ter-mile.
