FIRST TEST
TO COMMENCE ON FRIDAY.
The most important event of the cricket season bo far as Wellington i» concerned is to commence at the Basin Reserve on Friday, when the elect of New Zealand's players will meet the touring Victorians in the first Test. Victoria has a fine reputation in big cricket, and it will be the business of the visitors to see that it is • upheld. Taking a line through the matches against the provincial teams the Victorians do not give the impression of' being a side so superior to, New Zealand, as to make the game one-sided. But by big scoring efforts in the Canterbury and Otago matches their strength in batting has been revealed, and with the importance of this first Test match well in mind they may bp seen at their best. At the same time the iNew Zealand representatives will be using their best' endeavours to confirm the favourable impression which has been formed 6f Dominion cricket by performances in the. provincial matches. On both sides there are possibilities of big things, and the prospects are for a keen and interesting match. s
By order of the New Zealand Cricket Council, the match, which will extend over four days if necessary, will be commenced at noon on Friday, and this hour will also be the starting time of play on the subsequent days. Stumps are to be drawn at 6 p.m. each day, except on the last day, when the match will close at 5 p.m. A correspondent writes suggesting that the period of play should be brought forward half an hour in order to avoid the possibility of bad light at .the end of each day's play
