CIVIC LEAGUE SELECTIONS
It is reported that the Civic League Candidates Selection Committee will hold meetings soon to select a list of candidates for the Hospital Board, the Harbour Board, and the City Council, who will be recommended to the league's tVmbers and the general body of electors. At present there are some forty names in hand to select from, but the league desires to have as full a panel of names as possible from which to choose. If there are persons of special ability who can be brought forward, the league will be glad to have their names presented. In this issue an invitation is extended, by advertisement, to any citizen who has a name (or names) to propose (with the person's consent) to forward such name or names to the secretary, 39, Johnson street, before 5 p.m. on Monday, 23rd March. To give full time for consideration, a meeting will be held to deal with names submitted for the -Hospital Board and Harbour Board, and another meeting to consider those presented-, as nominees for the City Council The league submits to the citizens in general that this is a fair method of dealing with the business it has .in hand which is simply to make a recommendation, the final decision being in the hands of the electors to be exercised on polling day.
Many Southlanders are familiar with the story of the English tourist who. on his_ way to Stewart Island, confided to a fellow-traveller that lie would " pro.bably stroll round the island after tea and come home next day," but now a new " howler " has been broupht to licht (states the Southland " Times "). A few days ago, a little party of enlightened Englishmen walked into the local Tourist Office and presented the astonished and amused officer with keepsakes in the form of four pairs of brand new Canadian webbing snowshoes such as are used by trappers in the frozen north. They explained that before coming out to New Zealand they thought it a land of, eternal ice and snow, where travel would be impossible without the racquet-like encumbrances.
