FATAL ACCIDENT AT TERRACE GAOL

PRISONER KILLED BY FALL OF EABTH.

While preparing to undermine a bank in the prison yard at the Terrace Gaol yesterday, one of the prisoners, Henry Brown, a, single man, 51 years of age was killed by a fair of earth, i The fatality was investigated by the Coroner (Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.Mi), today. ■ , Dr- H. A. Gilmer, who was called to the gaol, after the accident, said that deceased's injuries consisted of a broken neck and bruises. Death was almost instantaneous. Jeremiah Charles Scanlon, superintendent at the Terrace Gaol, said deceas-. od was admitted to the gaol on. 17th January on the charge of being idle and disorderly Brown, who was with a party, was engaged in excavating a clay bank about nine feet high. The usual method of carrying out the work was employed, and to all appearances there was no danger. About two yards oi" clay came down suddenly and struck deceased. .

In returning a verdict, the Coroner said that the evidence disclosed an accident that no ono expected would happen. Deceased was said to have been a hrst-rate' workman, and the evidence disclosed that sufficient supervision was carried out, and every reasonable care taken. He found that deceased was accidentally killed at the Terraco Prison by a sudden fall of earth.'
