South Island match, played this afternoon, resulted in a very fine display at hockey, arousing the large crowd of spectators to a high degree of enthusiasm. ARhough the teams had not played together before splendid combined. movements among forwards and heady play by tho: backs, made the game oi the utmost interest, ■ together -with.__the! splendid example of .dogged determination of each side to win. The result was three goals to two .in favour.-of the Northerners, 'but with just 'a trifle of luck in the last quarter .of an hour, in which the South dominated the game, a draw would have about indicated the respective merits of the teams. .A few minutes after the start Hei took to the south circle, where f after a shot-was saved,- tlie goalkeeper, Hill, put: the ball through off the rebound. Still attacking, good work: by Biirt, full-back,^relieved South. Then H.,Hornor cleverly sent to tlio circle, allowing Maude to equalise. The Northernei-s soon regained the lead, Hei coming' through and goaling after a good mdi fridual effort. For the winners, Hei was the outstanding forward; Hill, M'Donald, and Newey were also prominent.
