MR. MASSY GREENE

(FKOK OUR OTTK COBRESPONDENT.)

_ . SYDNEY, 24th October, in t? dectKm of '^c Nationalist, Mr W. Massy Greene, by the joint State qi'ifVxK fiU the vacan°y in the New South Wales representation in the Federal Senate caused .by ithe death of Senator Millen, was attended with much of the party rancour and bitterness characteristic of an ordinary election. fu ™ jeene> who J* 8 won his EP U™ in the .federal arena in a remarkably short time both as Minister of Customs and as Minister of Defenca, and who might have been Prime Minister to-day but for his defeat at the last elections by a Country Party candidate, also Green by name, but without the final "c," was opposed by Labour and Progressive candidates. He was elected by an absolute majority on the first count. Objection n«d been taken to Mr. Massy Greene Dy the Progressives on the ground that he stands for high Protection, but ths effective retort was made that the time for such protest was when he was piloting through the Federal Parliament the tariff schedule now in force, and when ac could have been removed from office with the rest of the Hughes Ministry. The Federal Legislature wfll be tie richer for M r Maflsy Green •« reentry into it, and into a Chamber which is deplorably weak in the qualities of statesmanship. Even those with no sympathy for his fiscal views recognise hia outetandK ing qualities.
