PORT NICHOLSON BAND. One of the finest recitals of the 1923 season was that given in the Grand ! Opera House last night .by the Port Nicholson Silver Band, directed by Mr. I J. J. Drew. Last night's recital opened I as usual with a hymn, "Come Unto Me." The overture "1911," arranged : by Ord. Hume, and conceived on the : lines of the overture "1812," was an-] other ■ well-played number. The chimes : were lent by ■Mr. -Joseph H. Jones. ' Donizetti's "Lucia Di Lammermoor" ] was essayed, and the effect obtained by ■ the silver instruments was remarkable for the excellent tonal shading. The inarch "Salome"' was the band's concluding item. Sergeant, J. Glennie, trombonist, gave Boulcourt's "The Lat- I "est," and overcame tbe intricacies of the piece .with' case. .The principal artist assisting was Mr. Billy Edwards, the , well-known Australian artist, formerly a member of the Royal Strollers and other concert parties. Mr. Edwards is also; the composer of the popular jazz numbers, 'Tin, Going," "Yes, Indeed " "Dreamy Honolulu,"' and others. That he was, an instantaneous success was ■fully proven by, the clamorous demands for more of his songs at the piano. He delighted with "When Paderewski Plays," "Lilac Tree," "Gundagai," and "Down Wagga Way" (his own composition). The flute solos of Mr. Claude Tucker were a treat. He played Kohler's "Butterfly," Briccialdi's "Wind Among the Trees" (by request), and "The Swan." a delightful offering in every musical sense. Miss Beatrice Brittain. soprano, sting "Spring Comes Laughing" and "Love is a Slave." Miss. Brit-tain's voice is sweet and cultured. The Misses Essie Beirne, L.A.8., and Owen Esau, winners of test solos at. the Napier competitions, pleased all with their luir- i mony work in "Venetian Boating Song" and "When Song is Sweet." Mr. F. Crowther. at the piano, was again a sympathetic accompanist.' ' At The Ambassador the dance floor is excellent, and the orchestra one of Uie finest in Australasia. Reservations' can be made for any session, and arrangements cm be'made for the cntei-laininar ol largo parlies.
