"' LONDON, 16th July. -Lne abnormal heat wave in Engiand was followed by torrential rains and floods, -particularly about' Birmingham. Ine water was six feet deep in the Hockley Brook _ district, and four houses collapsed. Fire brigadesmen and policemon swam and waded from house to house, rescuing persons from the top stories, and carrying to safety many cripples and invalids. Mothers dropped babies into the arms of policemen standing in five feet of water. " '
- The river Swalbourne, -near Burton-on-Trent, overflowed, and inundated tho villages of Newborough, Hoarcross and Yoxall. ' The water flowed like a tidal wave an the main streets, ai;d every bridge for many miles was s-wept away.
