PHYSICAL TRAINING : SIR JAMES ALLEN'S INTEREST. (FROJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) LONDON, 18th May. Last Saturday evening Sir Jamos Allen presided at, the annual , display of the Incorporated British Association for Physical Training, held at the Northamp- , ton Polytechnic Institution, Clerkenwell. ', The High Commissioner was greatly interested in the methods of physical draining employed by this important institution, which has many branches throughput the country. In a few opening remarks he said that people in New Zealand took a very great. interest in the training of • their, youths and girls, and were grateful to. the. Motherland, which supplied them from time to time with teachers, who.helped thorn with their schemes. . "In my opinion," he said, " it is a good thing that our young people and middle-aged people should give • themsolves to physical training schemes. In Aew Zealand; as a result of the war, our experience was that a great nnmber of our young men who ought to have been fit for military service were not. On examination we found that one reasou, at any rate, why they were not fit was because of neglect in their boyhood and their young days in doing what yoa are doing this evening. They neglected to. remove defects that could have been removed by physical training." ,; Sir James went on to explain the work, ings of the Cl camp in New Zealand during the war. ,Out of .7178 men not passed ,by the doctors for active service, T?ooT h° iiaprove under training, 3528 became fit to be sent overseas, and from this total only 330 were discharged as unfit, a percentage not higher than that found among the men who had been passed originally by the doctors. Even in a young country like New- Zealand the percentage of unfit was surprisingly highland there-was no doubt that organised training such as he saw demonstrated that night was necessary. SUCCESSFUL NEW ZEALAND ARTIST It is gratifying to notice the increased and practical patronage which is being accorded to our leading New Zealand art-' ists by the councils of the metropolitan art societies. At the last annual exhibition of the Canterbury Art Society the council purchased an important painting by Mr. J. Weeks, admittedly one of the most progressive and talented of the younger school of New Zealand artists. The fact that Mr. Weeks is shortly to proceed to Europe to practise his art in London and Paris invests with a special interest the fine show of his paintings and drawings now being held at the well-known Murray Fuller Gallery, Lambtou quay. •' ■
