LATE SIR W. FRASER

TRIBUTE TO HIS QUALITIES.

In referring to the death of Sir William Fraser, Mr. J. Horn (Wakatipu) stated in the -House of Representatives yesterday afternoon that he had known Sir William for forty-five- years, and was well acquainted with his estimable qualities. The speaker had conducted an election campaign against him, and all.through the contest had been a very pleasant one.

The Minister of Defence 'the Hon; Sir H. Heaton Rhodes) said that he had first of all met Sir William Fraser just previous to the 1899 election. Sir Heaton remarked that he' had profited by the advice given him by Sir William on that occasion.. They had met in the old Reform. Party Whip's room; and of those who were present then the only one left who had had continued service in the House since was the Prime Minister. Sir William Fraser's advice was always sound, and he was a man of the very highest qualities. .

Mr. T..K, .Sidev (Dunedin-South) declared that Sir William Fraser was endowed with the quality of fair-minded-ness, and always approached 'questions that', were :raised in' a judicial frame of mind. ■ .......

Mr., G. Witty (Eiccartonj said he' had known Sir William Fraser for twenty •years. Sir W.illiam's word .was,his bond. He had lived, a life of usefulness, and had left behind a- record of which the country might be proud. ,'■".'""■ " Sir George Hunter (Waipawa), who had known the deceased gentleman, for thirty-five years, 'said that, notwithstanding the fact that Sir .William had lived so far away from his electorate, h» retained the confidence of the. people right up to the time when he retired from the Lower House. '

The House carried a motion expressing sympathy with Sir William FraserV relatives, and. placing on record* its high sense of tho distinguished: services •he bad rendered the country.
