FIRST TEST TO N.S.W.
MAORIS DEFEATED AFTER A BRILLIANT DISPLAY. (CNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT:) SYDNEY, 17th June. Fifteen thousand people witnessed the first Test between the Maori team and New South Wales Rugby Union fifteen. After a brilliant exposition, the home I team won by 27 points to 23, The garni; was marked by many regrettable instances of roughness, in which the Maoris were the chief offenders. The game from the outset was very fast, New South Wales leading at halftime by 13 points to ID. Tha Maoris played' with renewed dash in the second spell, and carried the game to New South Wales territory, but the local defence enabled New South Wales to withstand tho attacks. Notwithstanding the big scores, the game was one of the 'most brilliant Rugby Union displays seen here for a long time. The scorers for tho visitors were: Tureai, four goals; Gemmell, Potaka (2), Walker and Keepn, tries. For New South Wales, Nothling got three penalty goals, Mingey three goals, Raymond, : Sheehan, Grossman, and Elliott tries. Mr. Parata declined to comment on the match, but said that some of tho re- j feree's rulings were altogether foreign to him and his men.
