BELGIAN CABINET

DEFEATED ON LANGUAGE

ISSUE

THEUNIS MAY REMAIN PREMIER

(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.)

(AUSTRALIAN • NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.)

BRUSSELS, 14th June.

The cause of the resignation of the Theunis Cabinet was the rejection, by the Senate, by 143 votes to 4, of a Bill providing for instruction in Flemish at the Ghent University. Higher education throughout Belgium at the present time is possible only in the French language, but the war created a demand for a Flemish University. The problem of using Flemish in Ghent divided Belgian politics keenly in 1922, when the Chamber voted against a compromise making the university half French and half Flemish, but favoured a gradual increase in the use of Flemish.

The King will hold the usual consultation to-morrow. Ifc is probable that M. Theunis will be asked to form a new Cabinet, but the task will be most difficult. It is thought that dissolution of Parliament and a, General Election will be necessary before a new Government can be constituted.
