CARNIVAL WEEK

PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME.

The oarnival committee is making good progress towards the completion of its plans for Wellington's Welcome Week Carnival. The aim of the committee is to advertise .the city at home and abroad, find thus repair the neglect under which Wellington has unjustly suffered in the past. There will bo an exhibition not only of the produce of tho district, but of tho industries and handicrafts of the city, which will form a common ground for the meeting of the people of town and country; .and-the establishment of a closer contact. In regard to entertainment, the committee ilias iiaken the Opera House for a week, and will stage vocal and instrumental competitions, recitals, and dramatic/pieces. The Town Hall has been engaged for four nights, and among the events are a tu£r.-of-war, lightweight boxing championship of New Zealand, Citizens' Ball, and Children's Ball, and a provincial billiard tournament" will be held. There will be a welcome week golf tournament at Jtlirarnar, and a special Association football match on Thursday, Watersiders v. Wairarapa. The Winter Meeting at Trentham falls in the week with its three clays' racing. Wellington will also hold its first large motor show in tho new harbour shed on Thorn don breastwork. All space was taken up almost immediately, and it is believed that tho show will Be equal to anything of the kind held in the Dominion. On Saturday, 7th July. there will be a monster procession through the streets, in which it is hoped that all firms able to do so will participate with-appropriate displays. A. shop-window display will be a feature of the week, .and prizes are offered for the best-dressed window in each class and the befit novelty window. Arrangements have been made with the Railway Department for cheap fares, and it is hoped to secure some reduction in the steamship rates.
