FAREWELL SOCIAL

>A complimentary farewell social was tendered to Rev. H. T. and Mrs. Peat last evening in the Webb street Methodist Church/on the .eve of their departure from Wellington to take charge of the Palmerston North (Cuba Street) Circuit. There was a crowded and representative gathering, which was presided over by the Senior Circuit Steward of the Central Mission, Mr. J. R. Burley. Speeches appreciative of Mr. Peat's work during his short ministry as missioner were delivered- by the chairman, and Messrs. Noot, H. Baker, Leaman, Philips', and Spearman, keen regret being- expressed at his impending departure, arid wishing him prosperity in his new sphere of labour. Musical and elocutionary items were rendered during the evening by Mesdames W. Coventry, Hindle, and Hempton, Miss Mary Cooley, Mr. Wiri Baker and Master WCooley..' At Mr. Peat's special request nothing in the nature of a presentation wag made to him by the church officials. ; although the Sunday school presented him with a beautiful bound copy of th» Methodist Hymn BooE, and a goldmounted fountain ' pen, and the ladies' guild, of which Mrs. Peat was president, presented her with a copper te» tray of ornate design. In replying, Mr. Peat thanked the church officials and congregation warmly for the kindness, sympathy, and co-operation which had at air times been afforded to him,- emphasising the cordial relationship which had at all times existed between the officials and himself, and bespeaking a continuance of that spirit on behalf of his , successor, Revi J. F. Martin, ■ who commences his ministry at the mission on Sunday next.
