WANGANUI MEETING

NOTES ON THE RACING (BT TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE POST.) WANGANUI, This Day. The Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting opened in boisterous weather. The conditions improved after the third race. The withdrawal of Excelsior and Dignity from the Wiritoa Hack Race Handicap for apprentice riders left in eight runners. Para, the Fordell representative, was a good avourite. Otapapa was out in front for halfway, with Para and Bonnibrook next. The two latter had the field well strung out at the home bend. Para appeared to have the race halfway down the straight, where Bonibrook put in a claim, and, finishing best, won by a neck. Supporters of Para lost somo of their money. Valeric and Snatcher were withdrawn from the Stewards' Handicap, leaving in six runners. Backers made Listowel, who ran well in the classic races at Egmont, a short-priced favourite. He ran badly, never being in the front division. Kinsem was in behind the leaders for half-way, when she also dropped into the ruck. Kareao and Helen Rufus carried on the running for most of the way, being joined by GVucelle at the bend. Half-way down, Taipairu put in. a good run, and, sustaining it to the finish, won by half a length from Kareao, with Crueelle the same distance away, and Helen Rufus fourth. Taipaixu, recently sold by the Douglas Estate, was making a first appearance in the colours of Mr. A. B. Knight, patron of A. Oliver, the Awapuni trainer, who also has Bonibrook in his care.

All started for the Westmere Handicap Hurdle Race, except Explorer. The Aucklander Peter Amans was backed down to a very short price. Vvnipcord at once assumed the lead, and, with To Maire, set a solid pace. At the stand they were well clear of Peter Amans. Racing along the back, Battle Song moved up into second place, but failed to reach the leader, and dropped back beaten, as also did Te Maire. Racing to the straight, Whipcord increased his lead, and won comfortably from War Loan, who beat Peter Amans after a punishing finish. Malingerer did the best of the others.

All five acceptors for the Victory Welter Handicap were paraded. Santiago (A. Oliver's mount) was a hot favourite. Explorer, whose rider, L. A. Pine, claimed 511> allowance, jumped out ahead of the field and got a break. Racing along the back they closed up to him at the turn, but he drew out again, to win by a comfortable margin. Advent ran second for about half the journey, but then dropped back, finishing last. Santiago and Lockson made an effort three furlongs from home, but failed to reach the leader, who is iocally owned and trained.

All started for the Cup except Canowindra, in a good betting race. Muraahi was the actual favourite when the machine closed. Muraahi was first out, but was steadied, and Palestrina, Fera, and Omahu took up the running, being prominent at the stand, where Wheatfield was at the tail end of the field. With a round gone, Fera was in charge, but she gave way to Palestrina half a mile from home. She had a commanding lead racing across the top, but in the run to the post was headed by Sunart, who won by a length and a half, with Stork and Muraahi almost in line close to Palestrina. Enthusiasm was never prominent, and finished well back, with, Skylight and Fera. J. Barry generally rides for Mr. E. A. M'Kenzie's stable, but B. Reed had the mount to-day. Sunart had been more or less unsound at different parts of his career, but the sting being out of the ground, the going suited him to-day.

Ransack and Anticipate were taken out of the Juvenile Handicap. Deluge was sent out a hot favourite. King's Joy (a stable mate of Rational) jumped out smartly, and was never headed, winning comfortably from Deluge, with Ora's Delight and Misgovern next. The Trentham-trained Gartm.ore finished last. Her F cellency Viscountess Jellicoe was present, to see her colours earned. Both first and second were sired by Absurd. The winner is a half-brother to Starengo, and will win again before long. Haleina, Fleeting. Mixture, Loved One, San Franette, Released, and Camp Giin were taken out of the Petrie Hack Handicap, leaving in a dozen runners. Megan and Sunny Yale were the best backed. Alabama and Karutahi were smartest, to begin, and had the field well strung out when they had gone half way. . Both J,he leaders were beaten in the straight, where Tussore (A. Olliver) nut in a- claim, and won by a length from Sunny Vale. Some Red and Alabama were next.

There were nine starters in the Flying Handicap, after Valeric, Wake Up, Lady Kotiripo. and Snatcher were taken out. Killashandra, who ran a good second to Tamatete at Trentham, was a strong favourite. Killashandra broke the line, and with Rational, Birkie, and Thespian wgre prominent when they had gone a furlong. Thespian headed Birkio at half way. where Rational had ranced alongside Killashandra. In a pood finish Killashandra won by a head, with Thespian about a length away. Quest was well back.
