ATHENS, 15th September,
Arrivals at' Mytilene from Smyrna state that a reign of terror prevails in the city. The' Turks are despoiling the remainder of the populace. The sufferers include ' Europeans. Even large buildings, guarded by French marines, •were pillaged. Greeks had thrown themselves into the sea in order to escape Turkish fury. Several were rescued by Allied warships. , The British admiral, who landed the marines at Smyrna withdrew them ia order to avoid provoking the Turks.: Several villages were fired and many of the inhabitants massacred. Turkish officials, accused of having served with the Greekß, were executed. Many. English families have left the tcity.i TORTURED AND MURDERED, Refugees from Smyrna arrived -at Athens and recount even more terrible stories of Turkish ferocity. Immediately after entering the city soldiers massacred and robbed citizens. The quays were littered with corpses.; The Greek metropolitan of Smyrna, Bishop Chrysoßtomos, was tortured and murdered. A Greek journalist wag shot. dead after being, dragged through the streets tied to a motor-car. A building, .containing 800 women and children and old men was burned. / ; BRITISH ADMIRAL'S WARNING. The British admiral at;' Smyrna- has -warned the Turkish authorities, if the massacres are continued, the Turkish quarter will be bombarded. An Ameri-t can passenger from Smyrna says he saw 600 Armenians' from the Piraeus, forced by the, Turks to embark on. a lighter; and then shot'down from shore. .The bodies were left in the water. The flames last night "were entirely, beyond control and are approaching the' British Consulate. All foreign consul-. ates are probably doomed. The American Consulate, is burned. 306,000 uo-" fugees are in the city. All the Allied ■warships are filled.' ' BRITISH POSTMASTER KILLED. , An American' destroyer containing the. American Consul, several Amenc»nSj and numerous Armenian refugees has. arrived at Piraeus. They state that Mr. head of the • British. Post Office, and' two other, Britishers -were ■killed, also other -foreigners. -The Consul -will draw the attention of the United States to the matter in a detailed report '•0 the Athens legation.
