CRITICISING THE REFEREE

A REBUKE TO CLUBS..

The following letter from Mr. D. G. Stirrat (hon. secretary, Wellington Referees' Association) was i 1 read at last night's meeting of the Executive Committee of the Wellington Football Association. The- match in question was one between Swifts and Scottish Wanderers, played last week:—"ln future do not appoint me to any match in which the Swifts junior team is taking part. I wish to state that if the treatment meted out to me by several' members of this team last Saturday is an indication of the general behaviour of this club's various teams, then all I can say is that they are asking to' be turned down by referees. What with appealing, criticising decisions,, and threats to send in letters of complaint, you must admit that this sort of thing is hardly conducive to good: feeling with referees who do turn out each Saturday."The Chairman (Mr. A. E. -Wells) pointed' out to the captain of one of the teams, who was present, that the. action of the teams was hardly fair to the referee, and asked him to exercise more control over the members of his team. The referee's position in the game, he said, was not the happiest, and all the satisfaction ho got out of the game was the thought that he had rendered.: service that had been appreciated. This not only applied to any particular team, but to all teams in general. The captain of the team promised to fall in with the chairman's suggestions!
