THE WINTER RACES

SECOND DAY

NOTES ON THE RACING

(n "tut umciloi.")

The Winter Meeting was continued yesterday at Trentham in fine weather. 'There was a very satisfactory attendance for an ' off day. It included His Excellency the GovernorGeneral) Viscount Jellieoe, and Lady Jellicoe, Ministers and members of Parliament, Racing Conference delegates, Mr. H. F. Nicoll (president of the Trotting Conference), and Mr, William Higgins, a steward of the club, who returned from Australia on Monday. Heavy rain fell at Trentham overnight, affecting . the going, which was heavy, and somewhat upset "the calculations of some backers. Caretaker Scott took the precaution to spread straw about the enclosures, enabling patrons to get about with a minimum of discomfort. [ During the afternoon the totalisator staff handled the sum of £48,868 10s. AN OUTSIDER SCORES. There were seventeen ranners for the Corunna Hurdle Handicap aft-er Volo and Banogue had been scratched. Royal Exchange was the popular pick- with backers, although several of the others were well supported. The favourite was well placed behind Totara Jack in the early part, and the latter.lost his position when they had gone half-way. Five furlongs from home Sir Wai, Rowan, and Noble were well placed behind Royal Exchange, but they failed to get her. She led over the last hurdle, but in the run to the box failed in the heavy going to stave off a challenge thrown out by the light-weighted Nautical. Sir Wai and Rowan did best of the others. Walton fell at the second hurdle going out of the straight, and H. Turner got a nasty shaking. Nautical, who hails from North Canterbury, was not much fancied, and his supporters got nearly as good a return us the backers of Master Strowan received on the opening day. Nautical carried No. 13 saddle cloth. MAIDEN HANDICAP TO LADY RIDICULE. .' Of the dozen runners for the Maiden Handicap most support, wag forthcoming for Lady Ridicule, second in the Trial Handicap on Saturday,, and Comical, making his first appearance at (^he meet ing. The latter shaped disappointingly, and was never in . the first division. Lady Ridicule had too much pace for the rest.-of her opponents, and won pulling up. She is a four-year-old Absurd from Lady Gwen (dam of Courtfield), and was bred by her owner, Mr. A. N. Gibbons, whose colours have formerly been carried to victory at Trentham by the wellknown hurdler Kauri King. Orellana and Punishment, who finished third and fourth? are both on the improve, and will win later on. A. WAIRARAPA WINNER. The big, field of twenty-three contested the Jutland Handicap. Half-ai-dozen runners were welL supported, with the bracket (Haorangi and •Civilform.) actual favourite. The two Trentham representatives, Astinome and Backsheesh, were prominent from barrier rise. In the last hundred yards Miss Gold (coupled, with Weldone) put in a claim, and, overhauling the tiring leaders, got the verdict by a small margin. ' Tari, a good horse in bad going, did not run up to expectations. Radial did better than Listening Post, finishing just behind the placed'horses, and:, Civilform was in. front of Haurangi at the finish.- Miss Gold 'carried the colours of Mr. W. R. Kemball, the Wairarapa owner, who does not win out of his turn. ROMANCE WINS HACK STEEPLECHASE; All started for the Second Hack and .Hunters' Steeplechase except Staff Officer. It was a good betting race, with Seadown actual favourite. Hyginas only got as far as the second fence, where he . fell. When leading, Tatton Park toppled over at the sod wall near ,the six-furlongs post. At the stand, with half the journey gone, the favourite was lying in a handy position behind John Bunny, Romance, and Brown Linnet. Racing along the back the latter got a good break and looked all over a winner at the* board fence at the turn, where he came to grief. This mishap left Seadown in charge. :At the last fence he was joined by Romance, who, favoured with a light weight, finished best, and won with something in* hand. Old Gold, Oak Rose, and Red Cent made the best showine of the others. W. Roach (rider of Hyeinas) fractured a collarbone, and A' M'Mullin (rider" of - Brown' Linnet) broke his arm. Brown Linnet broke a hind leg, but*an effort is being made to save. her. Romance is trained at! Riccartjon by W. M'Donald for Mr. P.1 A. Herman, whose colours were also earned at the meeting Tiy Walton. Romance was also successful qn the second 4lay of the Dnnedin Meeting. GOOD PERFORMANCE BY TAME FOX. ' Bitters and Callaghan were taken out of the Parliamentary Handicap, leaving in eighteen runners. Royal Box was again sent out a strong favourite. He was well enough placed on the rails in. the early part, but gradually dropped back, and was not in the front halfdozen at the finish.- The unlucky horse of the race was Omahu, He got crushed out at the start, and was giving all his opponents a lead going out of the straight. He gradually worked his way through, and was in front a hundred yards from home. At the finish he was beaten by Tame Fox and Arch Salute, who took part in a slashing finish. At different stages of the race Dutch Courage, Kilkee, Strategy, DemoSj Dainty Step, and Tenterfield assisted in the pacemaking. Mort Avie, Stork (who was one of the last to leave the mark), and Forest Gold wero handy at the finish.. Tame Fox was also successful on the second day at Otaki. Arch Salute just failed to win the race for the second year in succession. A HAWKES BAY WINNER. A field of thirteen paraded for the Fleet Handicap after Bitholia, Birkenella, Liqueur, and Auckland were taken out. The Trial Plate winner, L'Amour, was a hot favourite. He was out making the pace to' half-way, whore Zero Hour headed him and had a good lead racing along the top stretch. Yankee Dan, who was always well placed, took charge in "the- straight, and looked like winning at the distance. L'Amour came again, and, disputing every inch of the ground, was only beaten after a good finish with Battle Knight. Wrangle ' did well to make a dead heat with Yankee Dan for third place: Economist again failed to run up to his private reputation. Battle' Knight is ono of ' the useful Solfcrino tribe, and won recently at Hastings. He is- held on lease by the Napier trainer J. E. Ly-ford. ANOTHER RICCARTON WINNER. All the fourteen acceptors for the High Weight Handicap were produced. Birkeneila (coupled with Gladful) was last to get off, and was at the end of a tailed-oft" field racing along the back. Ruatara began beet, and at the mile poet

•was showing out at the head of affairs, with Urgency, - Bitholia, and Rorke's Drift as his nearest attendants. At halfway. Coalition ran through the field, and was in charge half a mile from home. The steeplechase horse ran a surprisingly good race, and at the finish was \ only beaten by Urgency and Penury Rosa Old Gladful beat all the others. Urgency is owned by his breeder, Mr. H. A. Knight, and is one of F,_ D. Jones's Riccarton team.

PETONE HANDICAP TO BIG PUSH.

There were also fourteen runners in the concluding event, Petone Handicap. Sir Burnett, who ran very wide on the first day, was a big favourite. He shaped badly, being well back at the start, and did not improve his position much. ■ Moutoa's Gift was well placed in the early stages, but failed at the finish. Big Push drew away at the distance, and won by a good margin from Loyal Maid, with Cochineal and Rippling next. Big Push, who is trained by J. Thacker 'at Stratford, iwas placed behind Wrangle and Liqueur on the opening day. The. concluding results were :— : FLEET HANDICAP, of 350 aovs. Seven furlongs.
