THE WINTER RACES

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(W f'm UHCTLOT.")

Judging by the acceptances received for the second d»y of the Wellington races—an average of nineteen for eight races—some interesting racing should be witnessed, and punters should have quite a busy time sorting out the winners.

Trains • leave Lambton at regular intervals from 9.35 to 10.17 a.m., with additional ordinary trains from 12.10 to 1.20 p.m. . ; •

Among those in the Corinna Hurdle Handicap, one mile and a-half, are Volo and Spook, who contested the Trentham Hurdles on the opening day. The latter was prominent for about a mile and Ihalf. The place-getters in the Vittoria Hurdle Handicap are all engaged. Royal Exchange has gone, up a stone, Rowan 71b, and Sir Wai is again on the same mark. Royal Exchange will again take a lot;of beating. . „. After the good showing she mafe ..'in the Trial Plate, Lady Ridicule may :be sent out favourite for the Maiden :Handicap, six furlongs. She is.on the/same mark as Comical, who i'an second at Napier Park and ; a dead heatifor-, first at Hawkes. Bay recently, -, .ThelSSouthem contingent will.go for Balefire'Ma-fujl^ brother to Fiery Cross, who has'*shWn some form in the South. He. won at flororata, ran second at South Canterbury, and third at Ashburton. The race he won at Hororata was only worth 49 soys to the owner of the winner, so that the latter is eligible to compete. •■•'; In the Jutland-Handicap, six furlongs/ Listening Post, who won over the same distance on Saturday, has been raised 101b, Passionless 51^ and Civilfotm 21b. There are several fresh horses engaged including Tari, a good mudlark, who beat Weldone, Haurangi, Civilform, arid Passionless in the Heretaunga Handicap, six and a-Kalf furlongs, af Hastings. In the Final Handicap he 'carried 10.7, and ran third to Weldone, 9.7. , Haurangi and Counterstroke are others that did not run on the opening day. The lastnamed has a light weight, and will be suited by the going. For the firet day's win, Seadown has been raised a stone in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase. Grand Canyon was allowed to drop out, but the other place-getter (Br6wn Linnet) is down to ran. Others engaged are Old Gold and Red Cent, who started in.the big race on the first day. General Raven is a new horse engaged. On his last-appear-ance he ran second.to Silver Stride, to whom he. was conceding a stone, in the Kawera Hack Steeplechase, two miles, at Hastings. Seadown has only a couple of pounds more than he won with at Hastings, and whatever beats him should win. ■ ■ , ' \ .'■ ■ ■■ , :,

The distance of the Parliamentary Handicap is a couple of furlongs lonfier than the Charity Cup. Arch SaJu'tehas been raised I lib, Gold Kip 21b, while iJemos has been dropped a pound. The latter beat Tame Fox, Bitters, Dainty Step, and others in the Raukawa Cup atOtald, and many win again if the going is heavy.' He may find it difficult to concede a pound to Royal Box, who was unlucky in the running on Saturday. The Great Northern St. Leger winner 'is a class above the horses he is asked to meet.

Rorke's Drift has been a first-ekes per■former m the South, where he won two Dunedm Cups. If he has retained any galloping ability he may show up in the High Weight Handicap. . The Auckland.er Bitholia may be useful in this class of company, fie won over eight and ahalf furlongs at Egmont, and ran second in a mile race at Elkrslie. Coalition, ■who is within 31b of the minimum, won the Steeplechasers Flat Race ■at Trentham last July. Urgency, who is on the minimum, was not among the runners on the previous day. He has won and ran into a place in the South a few times this season. ; ■

The Fleet Handicap is seven furlongs, a furlonsr further than the To Aro Handicap. Wrangle has : cone up 111b and Liqueur 51b. Bitholia haa also been accepted for in this race, also L'Amour, winner of the Trial Plate. Economist, who let his backers down badly on Saturday, has been dropped 3Yb. Wrangle is a ireat weight carrier, but may find it difficult to concede, Bitholia 121b. LiqueiiT is also in the Petone Handicap, five furlongs, with the same weight; also Big: Push, third in the Te Aro' Handicap. Sir Burnett ran all over the course on Saturday, otherwise he.misht have won the Te Aro Handicap: The Reaver, Regard, and Moutoa's Gift are fresh horses engaged. The Reaver is probably the best performer. Regard won over the distance at Rangitikei.
