The final stages of the New South Wales-Maori'Bugby Union contest were worthy of the finest traditions of Rugby. The weather was fine, but dull, anc" the attendance totalled 6000. The Bluer had their own way in the ih'st half, and led by 22 to 6 at the'interval. W. Barclay scored both the Maoris' tries. Akuira and Tangitio failed to convert.
After the interval, Bannister.and -Barclay scored, Tangitio and Akuira failing to oonvei"t. Peina kicked a penalty goal, bringing the scores to 22 to 15. . With twenty minutes to go, the .visitors unbot-, tied thedr dash and brilliancy, and played like real champions. The forwards particularly threw themselves at the Blues, drove New South Wales past the half-way, aw' created an opening for Barclay, who sprinted thirty yards past Nothling and Schute, and scored. Peina failed with the kick. ' The Maoris immediately resumed thel offensive, play' developing into a sterling and exciting character. Thf New South Wales team was apparently stupefied.
While Phillips was- speeding in lightning fashion for the line, Nothling pushed him out at the twenty-five. From the line-out a Maori back initiated a brilliant passing movement, Peina falling across at the corner, Hvith a bevy of Blue play-el's on top of him. Pine oowverted. Peina. was compelled: to leave the field as the result of being injured while scoring. Matui, who dislocated an.elbow, also went off. New South Wales emerged from their shells in a. desperate effort to penetrate the Maoris' goal, but the latter's tackling was of a determined and deadly character. Raymond brilliantly spin-ted down the wing, but war forced on the comer flag, There was no further scoa'e, and the match elided':. Maoris, 23, New South Wales, 22.
