PETONE AND SELWYN.

In the . game between Petone and Selwyn at Petone, there was a good deal of play that was pleasing to watch. The- suburban backs showed fine con-certed-action, and- the: ,i Selwyn rearguard at times displayed dash, though, more of-aii individual character than that of their opponents.. The forwards added, their share, to an . interesting game., The teams were as follow:— Petone: Cowie; Thomas, M. Nicholla, Hamilton; M. Corner, E. Ryan; H. ("Doc") Nicholls; Ashton; Wylie, Pole, Priest, Griffen, Price, Parker, Nankivell. Selwyn : ■ Harrington; M'Lay, M'Brearty, Kershaw; Wogan, M'Quade; Eastgate; „Patching;- Desmond, H. Earle, De Clifton, Dotchin/ Kent, Reeve, M'Donald. Selwyn won the toss, but Petone set up a fairly strong attack, during which "Doc" Nicholls goaled from a iriark in front of the posts. 3-Q. Selwyn then attacked until "Doc" Nicholls cleared. A, glaring case of off-side play by a Sel-:; wyn forward enabled Petone to increase their score, Mark Nicholls kicking a goal. 6-0. In subsequent play, some spectacular :. unorthodox football on the ( part of the Petone 'backs delighted the spectators. A brilliant movement started, by. "Doc". Nicholls; ,and taken up 'by > Ryan arid Corner (botli handling twice) was attractively ended by Ham--I'ilton "scoring. M. Nicholls converted. 11-pV ; Shortly, afterwards,; E. Ryan started another, spectacular .'run, which ended in M. Nicholls scoring. He converted. 16-0. At this stage, the Petone i backs were taking all sorts of risks, which, against the weak Selwyn kicking, proved most effective. Before half time, Price added two tries, one of which M. Nicholls converted, and Kent (from a movement by Patching and De Clifton) ran in unopposed to ■ score for j Selwyn, the try' being unconverted. 24-3. Selwyn, with the advantage .of the wind, were more aggressive in the second spell. M'Lay scored under the posts, but M'Brearty failed with a eimple kick. 24-6. Ryan and "Doc" Nicholls were injured during the play which followed, and their places were subsequently taken by ' two fifth-class boys. Wogan added to Selwyii's tally by a try under the posts, and he converted. 26-11. Hamilton and Ashton each scored a try for Petone, and M. Nicholls. converted one. The final score was : Petono 32, Selwyn 11. Mr. J. Moffitt controlled the game. A DRAWN'GAME. 'Varsity met and direwjvi&h Berhampore at Kelbura Park on Saturday, after a game that was patchy in the first spell, but which brightened to brilliancy in the; last stages. Beiibampore forwards were superior in the close work, though this was counter-balanced by the good play of the, 'Varsity men in the loose. In the backs 'Varsity workedi together better, except that some of the passing was wild. Aitken, Mackay, and. Siddelle ! ropeatedly spoilt good efforts hi thia.way. Playing with the eun behind them, and with the advantage of the slight wind, Berhampore made the going at the opening of the first spell, and early missed, the chance of a score. The attack was. broken by the "Varsity forwards, who nearly topped off a kyse rush with a score. Gilmer, playing at centre three-quarters, made a fast ran to the Blue twenty-five, where'a penalty was awarded; Thomas missing an easy kick from Tight in front. Scott and Mackay were. prominent, and then Aitken threw the ball right out past Gilmer. Malfroy picked it up, and- just managed to get over. .-It was an easy kick, but Thomas again mis6ed. 3.0. Livened by their reverse, the Blues attacked hotly, until Thomas cleared with a dribbling" rush. Both sets_ of backs spoilt chances with bad passing, and no further score was recorded before halftime. '- '■ Berhampore nearly scored within , a minute of the resumption of play. Standon ran down the line, and, suddenly changing direction, punted infield, where there were no defenders. Malfroy'' speed enabled him to forci down just in time. A'scort came shortly afterwards. A Berhampore back centred, and a forward, standing well off-side, smothered tb 'Varsity player as;be took the.ball. Ikshing'tbe ball on Berhampore scored, Duncan being_ the man to touch down. Watson missed with a good kick. 3-3. ■ Mackay made a. lot of ground, and then Aitken passedright out to Siddel'ls. Had the pass been a good one, it would have been difficult to. prevent a score. Immediately afterwards 'Varsity wore awarded a penalty, and Aitken ■missed with a" good kick. A pretty piece of work by the Blue half, who dashed down the 'side-line', saw 'Varsity defending their line, and.■ ouca again 'Duncan went over; ;tks tim-s under the goal. Heater converted the try. 8-3. With but a few -minuter to go, the position looked bjid'for -'Varsity, but, refusing to Jicbept-defe-.it, they set in.1 f eerira of attacks. Thomas nnd M-ilfvoy were tosret'liev in ft w-h, fro"* wticli Gihuer -ultimately obtained:- the,

ball, only to kick too hard when centring. Fl-om the kick out Siddells secured near the half-way. He cut in neatly, and ran to the twenty-five, where lie passed to Gilmer. The latter was blocked, but centred neatly to have the attack carried on by the forwards, a good bit of wark being topped off by Maloney, who scored near the posts. This time Thomas converted the try. 8-8. The game ended'with-no further score. Mr. Hylton was referee.
