A largely-attended meeting of the Civic League last night, with representatives from the various municipal associations in the different suburbs, decided to nominate Mr. A. W. Parton as the citizens' candidate for the vacancy on the City Council caused by the death of the late Councillor Underwood. All present pledged themselves to support Mr. Parton, and committees were appointed for the handling of finance, publicity, and other necessary work in connection with the election. Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P., presided. The meeting 'decided to enter an emphatic protest " against the interference in the city's municipal affairs by the Labour politicians, who are not.even electors or residents of the city." Highly appreciative references were made by the officers of the League, and the meeting, to the fine civic spirit displayed by all of the citizens who had submitted their names to the selection, special reference being made to Mrs. K. Preston. It was regretted that only one from amongst tho number could be chosen.

Mr. A. A. George, who was pressed by the Te Aro Advancement Association to stand, has decided, owing to the many calls on his time diving the next six months, not to become a candidate.
