(_* ODR SPECIAL REPOBTBR.)

TRENTHAM, This Day.

The Wellington Racing Club's Winter • meeting, a third of the proceeds of which are to go to the Unemployed ■Relief Fund, opened under very favourable circumstances at Trentham to-day. 'After the Tecent rain and^the fine wea- : ther of the last few days, the course was in good order for this time of the year. The lawns and grounds bop an attractive appearance. Passing clouds made the weather dull at time, but ; sunshine was not quite absent, and al- j together, conditions wer^ enjoyable. ■The popularity of the melfing was ir(•dicated by the large fields, and the . attendance of the public was well up to the standard. The Lower Hutt ! Municipal Band is supplying music. Among those present were the Gov-ernor-General and the Prime Minister. Results up' to the time of going to press were as follow : — VITTORIA HURDLE HANDICAP, of 350 soys; second horse 70 soys and third 35 soys from the stake. One mile and three-quarters. j .0. S. Warner, was withdrawn, ' and a field of sixteen went to the barrier. Passenger, Royal Exchange, and Rorke's Drift were most fancied. 'On the rise of the barrier the field was well bunched until the first hurdle, where a couple of the horses jumped .wide. Royal Exchange early assumed the lead, and, passing the stand, was in front of Sir Wai, with the others stretched out and Snub tailed off. Royal Exchange was going well, and maintainJed his position round to the back, where Sunray and Rowan went out. The position along the back was: Royal Exchange, Sunray, Rowan, and Sir Wai. The leader was challenged by Sunray hefore the straight was entered, but the latter made a faulty jump. Royal Exchange was first into the straight, and, going on nicely, registered a comfortable win by three lengths. Rowan was second, and Sir Wai, who had headed off Snnray, was three lengths further iback. Snnray was fourth, Passenger fifth, and Stake's Drift next. The field was well bunched out at the finish. Public opinion was strongly in favour of Xi'Amour- and Lady Ridicule, while there ■was a good deal of support for Para.. The public was not misguided, and a fairly interesting race resulted in the two favourites filling places one and two. The rise of the barrier saw a very good st_rt, and a well-bunched field turning into the straight proper was headed by Lady Ridicule. Over the last part of the journey L'Amour showed most pace, and won by two and a half lengths. Lady Ridicule was only a neck in front of Royal Despatch, and almost on even terms with the last-named were BoughJan Dhoun and Refrigeration. Time, tinin. 17 2-ssec. (Winner trained by J. T. Jamieson.) .'FIRST HACK AND 'HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, of 350 soys, second horse 70 soys and third horse 35 soys from the stake; for hacks and qualified hunters. Two miles and five furlongs. F. The withdrawal of Lord Nagar and Oak Rose left a. field of thirteen, Grand Canyon being favourite, with Seadown, Romance, and Ethiopian also well supported. From the outset of the race there was a good deal of incident. Tatton Park and the favourite led down the straight for the first time, with Seadown -.in close attendance, and Hyginas at the reai' of the field. Going along to the back stretch, Tatton Park and Grand Canyon remained in the lead and also 'along tho back, where Hylans and Lyroe stopped at one of the fences. Grand Canyon and Tatton Park continued to. have charge, but before leaching Jhe straight the favourite made a faulty jump and nearly came down, the rider, E. Warner, making a great recovery. Passing the stand for tho second time, the pair were still in command, 'with Seadown and Ngakantii next. The positions were not much changed going ■ round the back again, but before coming to the straight again several horses dislodged their liders, these including Ethiopian and Ngakanui. Hyginas had also dropped out, and it was seen that when in the' straight again Staff Officer -was well placed. The remainder of the journey was contested by six horses, Seadown, Grand Canyon, Tatton Park, and Staff Officer being still prominent to the

straight. Tatton Park fell at the third to last jump, and Seadown, in command, finished strongly to win by four lengths from the favourite, with Brown Linnet, who had improved her position over the latter part of the journey, third, three lengths away. John Bunny was fourth and Sir Agnes and Romance followed. Time, smin 41sec.
