ADVANCES TO LOCAL BODIES.

Little hope was given by the Prime Mnister yesterday to Mr. R. Masters (Stratford), who asked if there' were any likelihood of increasing from £5000 to £10,000 the maximum annual advance by the State Advances Department to small local_ bodies. Mr. Masters said that some of the small local bodies found it difficult to lift the grants made to them by the Public Works Department, because they could not find money to do their share of the work.

The Prime Minister said that there was not much likelihood of the limit being raised at present. There was a great run on the State Advances Department owing to the low rate of interest, but he suggested .that the local bodies might be able ot obtain money from one of the other State lending Departments.
