THE FUTURE NEW YORK
Russell Sage lived long, lending money, and piling: up tens of millions,. then died, leaving all to his wife. She died, leaving all to a "Russell Sage Foundation" in memory of her husband. The foundation has decided to spend money mapping out the development and expansion of New York City for the next 100 years. If a committee 100 years .ago had planned (writes the American) for a century of New York extension, the committee would be surprised if it could return to-day. .Still more surprised would be to-day's committee if it should come back 100 years from now. It might find many city blocks thrown into one to make safe landing places for flying machines—Manhattan Island one big office, with the real city on Long Island and across tho Hudson in New Jersey. Or it might find city government a mere shell, the population of the city cut down to almost nothing, with the millions living far off on the hills, flying to their work, some to a great factory in one location, others tea business building in another location, with cities gone and specialised buildings a mile or more square replacing them. The ant hill that we call a city, with its draughts, darkness, filth", and slums, will not esist alwaya.
