NORTH ISLAND CONTEST.

For: some obscure reason, , Nelson has been chosen as the scene of this year's Inter-island match, and the game will be played on ,29th, July. Why Nelsin? ;It seems a rather absurd policy on the part of the New Zealand Association to play such an important fixture at a place' where the possibilities of securing, a satisfactory gate are very remote. One of the four centres should be chosen for the match! While the association manages things in this way, hockey will not advance, a

The Wellington selectors have nominated six players for inclusion in the North Island team, and while the writer has no fault to find with the selected players, he is of the opinion that the number .nominated is I too small. However, this is.a mattei that can, and probably, will, be rectified later. The nominees—C. Moore (goal), F. Sherwood (full-back), C. Martin and Fraser (halves),»and D. Hood and E. Heaphy (forwards] —are all firstrclass men, but there are others in Wellington who have claims to consideration. These include. Scott (Hutt), whom the writer considers to be one of the best halves in Wellington; A. M. Cousins-(University), who is the equal of Heaphy, at least, as a bully, and could be made use of as either an inside right or inside left; and Watchmar (Karori), who is a fine left wing. There is another reason why the' Wellington selectors should nominate more players. The match is being played at Nelson, and the selectors, should the need arise, could call on local men to. fill .any vacancies. TheOtaxro representative selectors have nominated L. Ireland and C. Hay ward for the South Island team. This seems to be anothei case of hiding lights under a bushel.
