Cardinal Bourne, who has now celebrated his sixty-first birthday, is held in high respect throughout Londpn.: He ; is by birth a Londonei. He was born;at Clapham. and his father, who .was a Civil servant in the .post office, was a convert to Roman Catholicism. The late Bishop Lenihan, of Auckland, was also closely associated with Roman Catholic work in Clapham before coming to New Zealand. This by the way. Cardinal Bourne was the. youngest member of the .English episcopate when he' was translated from Southwark .to Westminster as . Cardinal Vaughan's successor in ' August, 1903. At the Consistory, held in 1911 the Archbishop assumed "the hue of Westminster," his elevation to the Cardinalate being hailed with joy by his flnck.
