His Excellency the Governor-General, Viscount Jellicoe, paid a visit to Akaroa yesterday, and laid the foundation stone of the Banks Peninsula Soldiers' Memorial, a Gothic arch surmounted .by a column with a cross".- A Press Association message states that as it was His Excellency's first -visit to the' district, the .town was en fete. He was accorded a civic .reception,.presented with an illuminated address, and entertained at luncheon. ; Her Excellency Viscountess Jellicoe and the Hon. Lucy Jellicoe arrived by the Wahine from Lyttelton this morning.
Mr. I. J. Quayle has been appointed Deputy-Registrar of Births and Deaths at Upper Hutt. Mr. Luther Hill is gazetted Registrar of Electors and Returning Officer for Wellington Suburbs. " Mr. J. J. Virgo, who has been visiting New Zealand in connection with Y.M. C,A. matters, left for Sydney to-day. Mr. B. Arnst, the sculler, was a passenger to-day by the Ulimaroa to Sydney. Messrs. .N. J. Dolamere and G. R. Crowley have been appointed honorary rangers of Tongariro National Park. Mr. A. V. Sturtevant has been appointed District Land Registrar, . Examiner of Titles, and Registrar of Deeds for the Auckland district. ' ■ . ' Members of the Paraparaumu Domain Board have been appointed as follow:— Messrs. F. Cordukes, W. Cramb, D. D. Hyde, M. Maclean, and C. B. Reeve. ' Mr. G. W. Barltrop has been appointed Deputy Commissioner, Govern(ment Insurance Department, and De-' puty Superintendent of the ' National Provident Fund. Councillor R. D. Martin, a member of the Christchurch City Council, who, with Mrs. Martin, is at present visiting Wel- , lington, was present at last night's meet- ' ing of the Wellington City Council. Mr. Martin was cordially welcomed by the Mayor (Mr:-R.'A. Wright, M.P.), and suitably returned -thanks Mr. H..M. Gore, of-the Hansard staff, has notified the Government of his intention to retire on superannuation as from the "end of 'June next. Mr. Gore entered the Public Service as a cadet in the Lands' Department in 1879. Subsequently he was for six years private secretary to the Minister of Lands under different Administrations. He has completed 42£-years' service. ' ' Mr. H. Bullock', head ' storeman 'for Messrs. Levin and Co., who has retired after 34 years' .service, was farewelled by the staff last evening, and prtiented with gold watches for himself and wife . as a mark of the high esteem'in which both arc held. The presentation was made by Mr. A. E. Mabin, a member of the directorate, "who wished' Mr. and Mrs. Bullock bon voyage on their trip to the United States and the Old Country. Mr. C. W. Batten, who has resigned the appointment of District Repatriation Officer for the purpose of entering the Wellington office of the British Empire Trading Company, concludes his service with- the Repatriation Department today. He has held the appointment of District Repatriation Officer sincg the •inception of the repatriation scheme, and-iiii that won a high reputation' for his' business capacity tnd unfailing tact and courtesy. Mr. Ward entered the service of the liands and Survey Department in Auckland as a'cadet in February, 1908, ti-ahsfetTif|g;;t6:tlie Public Trust Office in 1914. ;He held a position' on the legal branch in the Head Office until July 1919, when he was appointed Dis-. trict Solicitor at Auckland, which position he occupied until August, 1920, when he.was appointed First Assistant Local! Deputy Public Trustee. Since September last Mr. Ward has temporarily filled the position of Local Deputy Public Trustee at Auckland. He, is a qualified solicitor, and was for two years absent on active service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. ■ The funeral of the late Mr. H. J. Williams took . place yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of members of, the Masonic craft and representatives of the institutions and public bodies with which the deceased had been indentified. The funeral service in St. Paul's Pro-Cathe-dral was conducted by the Yen. Archdeacon A. M. Johnson, assisted by the Revs. C. F. Askew and J. H. Sykes. At the close of the service the Dead .March, in "Saul" was played. At the graveside in Bolton-street Cemetery there was a further short service followed by a Masonic service conducted by the Deputy-Grand .Master, R.Vf. Bro. Seaton, the Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. G. Russell, and V.W. Bro. Porritt. The Rev. D. Catchpole conducted a brief service for the Oddfellows Order. The' chief mourners were: Messrs. V. and C. Williams (sons), P. and H. E. Hamilton (brothers-in-law); and' P.' Hamilton, jun. The pallbearers were members of the Masonic Grand Lodge. Special reference was made at a meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board yesterday to the death of Mr. H.. J. Williams; who was at one time a member of the Wellington District Hospital Board, the Welling-ton-Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board, and the Wellington Hospital Board of Contributors. The present board is successor to these bodies, and yesterday passed in silence a motion placing on record the late Mr. Williamd's services, and expressing sympathy with his relatives., .
