PERSONAL MATTERS
Captain P. J, Foster, late master of the Waihemo, has been appointed local marine superintendent for the Union Steam Ship ■ Company at Dunedin. The death occurred at Lower Hutt yesterday of Mr. Robert Stevens, one of the oldest settlers in the Hutt Valley, at the age of 83 years. The late Mr. Stevens, who settled in the., Valley over thirty years ago, took a keen interest in all matters of local government, and in 1900 he was elected a member of the Lowei Hutt Borough Council,*remaining a useful councillor for a number of years. He was one of the founders of the Hutt River Board, and was elected a member of that body at the first election in 1900. In later years he was chairman of the body, and as such he did much valuable work. He was'also'a member of the old Tramway Board. The late Mr. Stevens leaves a grown-up family of three sons and five daughters. His eldest son is Mr. Andrew Stevens, stationmqster -at Rahgiora. The funeral will take place at the Taita Comoterj to-morrow moming. '
