" A SAILORS' HOME "

AN ANNIVERSARY MEETING

The anniversary meeting of the Sailors' Friend Society, was held in the Sailors' Institute building last evening. His Excellency, the Governor-General, Viscount Jellicoe, presided. Others present included Mr. O M. Turrell (manager of the New Zealand Shipping-Co.), Commander Dykes (of the training ship Amokura), and Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P. In his opening remarks, His Excellency said the Sailors.' Friend "Society was an institution that existed for the mutual benefit of . the sailors, and no one could speak too highly of such a society. He regretted that there were not many sailors present that night, but that was because there were not many liners in port. The sailor, conthmed\ Lord Jellicoe, was the one man in the world who needed a home away from homes He was sure that the sailors felt grateful for what was being done for them there. He was glad to see tKe boys from the Amokura present. These boys, who were taking up 'the sea as.-a profession, should have the sympathy ,of the people, and they should never forget what a profession the sea was. In conclusion, .-he said how very pleased; he was to meet those-who spent so' much of their time in the interests of the sea-faring men. He-could but wish' ..both the sailors and those Who worked for, them all happiness' and prosperity. •,.'■'. During the evening' various motions expressive of> appreciation of the work being done by the institute, and congratulatory of the results achieved by the. ■workers-' themselves, were passed' by the meeting.- Mr. Moore; missioner, also gave, a resume of the work of the society.' A programme of musical' and vocal items was contributed by Mr.; J. J. Jenkins, Misa Birch, and others. Miss Bart's orchestra was in attendance. -' ■ . ■ ■ . '■>
