THORNDON RECLAMATION
AGREEMENT REACHED.
" I have to advise that practically an arrangement has been arrived at by the two parties concerned in the Thorn don reclamation; that is, the Railway Department and the Harbour Board, stated the chairman (Mr. J. G. Harkness), at last night's meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board. ■ , '
The board, he explained, had not gained all it had asked for. "Unfortunately, the board was not to get a further depth of' land back from the breastwork, but, at all events, tl]e cost the board had originally been asked to bear for the laying of the sidings to the_ wharf was practically being /held in abeyance. There were one or two other smaller concessions. Instructions had been given that the agreement was to be executed at onca: indeed, he had thought it would have been'before the board at that meeting. As soon as it was signed, the board could proceed with certain land surveys necessary for tho preparation of the work.
Mr. M, Cohen wished to make certain that, even at that late hour, there was no possibility that the extra area could bo obtained. Was it possible, he asked, to extend the" reclamation seaward to secure the extra depth of fend? The Chairman replied that it would be possible to do this, but it would make a break in the wall, which, in the opinion of the harbour-master and the engineer, would result in the loss of a berth. The executive officers were of opinion that it was not desirable to make the break in the wall-
