DAIRY PRODUCE GRADING
Through an inadvertence, the figures quoted in The Post on_ Saturday of the quantities of dairy produce graded were given as for 12 months ended 31st December, instead of for the month of December only. The quantities of butter and cheese actually graded for the live, months ended 31st December last was 690,222 boxes of, butter and 401,986 crates of cheese. Had the projected' charges for grading of Id per box on butter and 1 l-3d on cheese been mad© for this service a total sum of over £5000 would have been paid by producers to the Government for the service of grading.* hitherto rendered gratuitously. .The benefit.of the new charges will not be fully appreciated until next season, because of the current season the most productive part has passed. The Government appears to have realised that the dairying industry is no longer in need of assistance by way of free grading—virtually a Government guarantee of the quality and character of the produce.
