DEATH OF EX-JUDGE BUTTON
Advioe was received in, Wellington from Auckland yesterday of the death of Mr- Charles' Edw*rd Button, formerly * Judge of the Supreme Court of New Zealand. Born in .Launoeston in 1838 he was educated at Hobart, and was admitted to the Tasmanian Bar in 1861. He oame.to New in 1863, Eettling at. Inveroargill. Two years later he entered . into legal partnership at Hokitika with Mr. W- S. Reid (lato Solicitor-General). Mr. Button was elected Mayor of Hokitika in 1869, and represented Westland in Parliament in 1876-77. Resigning his seat he went to Christohurch, and after practising there for two or three years, joined the firm of Messrs. Whitaker and Russell, the well-known barristers .and solicitors, of Auckland. ...Ho was eleoted'to represent Auckland City in the House of Representatives in 1894. and continued to hold his seat until 1897. On 12th March, 1907, he was elevated to the Supreme Court Benoh, »nd after a short term he retired. His wife predeceased him some years ago. The deceased, who was 82 years of age, is survived by one son and one daughter (Mr. E. H. Button, farmer, of Taupiri, and Mrs. L. Taylor, of iChefoo, China).
