COAL SHORTAGE
10 18l EIITOR. Sir,—There is at present a coal famine in this city. No stocks are held in. the yards, and the total amounts coming ashore for household purposes is 190 tons ex Komata, and this is to last the city for one week. The requirements of the city for this period approximate 1000 tons. So the position is certainly serious. There is also a small quantity of Newcastle 'coal available, but the cost of this is prohibitive. The s.s. Wanaka is due here to-day with a cargo of Newcastle coal at the ordinary freight rate, and this coal originally intended for industrial and household purposes, has now, I understand, been diverted to Wellington and country gas works. I am quite sure that the Minister, when approving this diversion,' did not realise the seriousness of th position. There are hundreds of homes m this city that have neither gas nor electric appliances for heating purposes, and in their interests, and in the interests of the public generally, I would appeal to him to alter his decision before it is too late.'—l am. etc.. ' CITIZEN. j 7th August. r '■■
