Mnrehie's place as purser of the Fateena, Mr. Lister, chief officer of the Northumber,and, who was left behind at Wellington in hospital, is a pasgeDger by the Suffolk. Captain M. F. Lane has taken charge of the schooner Hazel Bepton, recently purchased by, the Northern Coal Company, and his mates are Messrs. T. M. Nicholson and J. B. Hall. The Hazel Eepton is now awaiting a favourable opportunity to get away for Auckland. Captain C. C. Hutchings, traffic manager for the Auckland Harbour Board, died at Auckland last week. Captain Hotcbings, who was 40 years of age, was a native of England, and commenced his career in the mercantile marine, coming to New Zealand as an officer in tha service of the Buckland Line. He entered the employ of the Auckland Harbour Board about twelve or thirteen years ago. At the outset he was a junior officer in the harbourmaster's department. He was appointed assistant tralllc manager in 1910, and on the retirement of Mr. E. W. Burgess m 1914, he cuceivdcH Wo> as traffic manager. A NEW COMPANY. THE SCHOONEE OAKLAND. Private- advices received in Christchurch state that the schooner Oakland,- which left Samoa on the 12th March, arrived at Portland, Oregon, after a trip nt 96 days. Two or three gales were experienced during the voyage, blowing the sai)a to pieces, but most of the journey was traversed in calm weather, though at one tima the vessel was covering 13 knots. It will 'je remembered that the Oakland was placed ander arrest at Lyttelton pending the production of a bond on account of a claim for damages amounting to £4250, claimed by Messrs. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., and Messrs. W. H. Simms and Sons, of Christchurch. The vessel was finally released on the 24th December, and left Lyttelton for Apia on the 30th December. It is understood that the master of the Oakland (Captain Wendt), upon her arrival at Portland, signed oil that vessel and took command of one of the new American ■wooden steamers. The Northern Company's Arapawa, which is stranded on the Waitara bar, is a vessel of 291 tons. She was built by J. Fullerton and Co., of Paisley, in 1908. Her principal dimensions ares-Length, 120.5ft; breadth, 22.1ft; depth, B.6ft. It is interesting to note that Mr. W. Bennett (Secretary of the Wellington Waterside Labour Employment Association) was engineer of the vessel when she came out from the United Kingdom. The Government lighthouse Steamer Hinemoa left Bluff yesterday afternoon for the West Coast Sounds, Westport, Kahurangi Point lighthouse, and Wellington. Under favourable ■weather conditions the vessel will reach Westport on Thursday next, and Wellington about two days later. The Pateena left Onehunga at 4.30 p.m. yesterday for Wellington. She cleared the Mana;kau Heads at 0.15 p.m., and should reach Welljngton about 7 o'clock this evening. With passengers the Komata will leave W«l----lington to-morrow for Westport. The Eosamond, at present at Dunedin, is to return to Wellington to load for Timaru at the end of next week. With coal for bunkering the Euahine and the Armagh, the Blackball collier Ngahere is--due at Wellington to-morrow morning from Greymouth. Bound for Napier and Wellington the Mokoia left Auckland at 10.30 p.m. yesterday. She is due here on Saturday morning, and will sail the same evening for Dunedin. With transhipments ex the Makura and Niagara the Union Company's freighter Katoa is to leave Auckland on Saturday for Wellington. On Thursday next the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruapehu will leave Auckland for Wellington to complete her Homeward loading. She will sail from. Wellington for London, via Panama, on the 21st August. The Armagh is to leave Wellington at the end of next week for London, via Panama. The S.S. and A. liner Waimana will leave Wellington to-morrow afternoon for London, vi& Panama. The Ne-w Zealand Shipping Company's liner Opawa lert Sydney on Tuesday for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. ' Owing to wet weather yesterday the Ngatoro was unable to complete the discharge of her cargo of cement, and her departure for New Plymouth and Greymouth has been postponed until to-night.
