DAIRY STOCK

(BY TBIEOBAPH.—PBESS ASSOCIATION.)

HAMILTON, This Day. . Mr. A. C. Piper, Assistant Chief Traf T fie Manager, and Mr. A. Duncan, Auckland District Traffic Manager, visited Hamilton and conferred wifcn representatives of the dairy and other industries. A note was taken of all requirements, and a promise to give serious consideration to carry the most urgent goods at the earliest possible moment. It was not intended to increase the present train service, but to use it.to its utmost capa-! city. Belief was promised in the transport, of dairy stock, and urgent pressing cases, but it was made perfectly" clear that this was not to be taken as an indication that the Department was 'prepared to undertake at present; the carriage of live stock other than for butchers' concerns.

Sir, —I was _ surprised, to-day to learn that the restrictions as to travelling included all places but those to which "suburban fares'* are issued. This seems to me to be unreasonable, in so far as the Manawatu line is concerned, and; Paekakariki in particular. The latter station is generally looked upon as suburban, although, unfortunately, suburban fares are not issued to it. It is the terminus of several suburban trains, and it would appear that unless these trains stop at Plimmerton they will ran practically empty for the remainder of the journey. Baekakariki, apart from the railway buildings, is entirely a seaside resort, anfl a number of, people have erected week-end cottages. Owing to family ties preventing' our taking long1 trips I have placed' my humble means in a cottiage, and have been in the habit of spending week ends with my wife and children, but it seems we must be deprived of ' this email relaxation, although but a few miles from Plimmerton. Surely these week ends cannot be classed as\"joy riding." If these suburban trains were not running as far as Paekakariki there may be some reason to apply the restriction. It seems to mej the General Manager might stretch a I point to make the .exceptions apply to. "suburban trains," and not "suburban fares."—l am, etc., . , ' HARD HIT. Ist August.
