MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Captain Hennah and Mr. J. W. Ellison, J.P.s, presided at the Magistrate's Court this morning.

Three first-offending inebriates who had spent the night in the cells were convicted and discharged. John M'Kinnon, a third offender, was fined 10s, in default three days in gaol, and John Russell, who had also been several times, previously convicted of drunkenness, was given the choice between paying a fine of 20a or going to gaol for a week.

Thomas Blake and George Saville, both of whom were charged with drunkenness and breaking their prohibition orders, are to appear again to-morrow. Charles Cowio Durham was fined 40s, with costs, for having behaved in a threatening manner in Stafford-street last evening, and was convicted and discharged, for having trespassed on the property of Lilia Glew. There had been a dispute between Durham and Mrs. Glew, and, last evening, according to the evidence called by Inspector Marsack, the man accosted the woman in Majoribanksstreet, followed her to her house, using very unpleasant language, and then, when the door was shut on him, refused to leave the premises. A constable was informed, and the man was taken in charge. .

John Edward Johnston is to appear again to-morrow in answer to a charge of having stolen a portmanteau and contents, valued at £19 10s, the property of Stanley Gordon Cooper. On the application of Mr. G. W. Mellish, William James Williamson, who is charged with having'broken' and entered .tho'!premist^!.'of Aririie Duffy at Lyall Bay last week and stealing a gold watch and' chain, two suits of clothes, aud two pairs of boots, of a total value of £79 4s_ was remanded for ,one week. Bail was fixed at £50, together, with two approved sureties of £25 each. Thomas Patrick Drury, who, the police affirm, has by his actions rendered himself liable to conviction as an idle and disorderly person, was further remanded for seven days.

A similar remand, was granted by the Bench in the case of Charles Frederick Butler, who was arrested this morning on a charge of having stolen £2 10s, the property of John Muir.
