NORTH ISLAND BREWERY CO., Ltd.
Where "Tui" Ales and Stout are Brewed. At Mangatainoka—a small settlement on_ the Wellington-Woodville railway line —is situated one of the largest and most up-to-date brewery concerns there is in New Zealand. This is where the now famous "Tui" ales and stout are brewed. Why was Mangatainoka selected for a business of this nature? might be asked by many, but there is a full and adequate answer to such a question. Pure water is one of the first essentials to good-class beer, and nowhere is there to be found such a pure crystal water supply as there is at Mangatainoka. At the very commencement of the business, too, the management of the brewery decided to make it their constant aim, irrespective of* immediate gain, to develop its produce to the greatest. form of perfection, so that the brewery and its products might always be considered models, and ensure by their example the manufacture of beer and stout in New Zealand being kept up to a high standard of perfection. The founders'* intentions have been strictly observed, and consequently these high-class beverages are eagerly sought after and enjoy a very large sale throughout New Zealaud and elsewhere. Mr. H. Cowan, the managing director, who continues to take a keen interest in tho business, , suffered several sad bereavements during the currency of the great war, and it looked for a time as if tthe brewery would have to close down. It is^ to the credit of the Mangatainoka district, however, and the brewery, that every man, young and old, from Mr. Robert Henderson, the brewery manager down, either vohmteered or, was called up in the various ballots, and unfortunately many of these brave men went forth to battle for the Empire never to return. One of these, was the managing director's youngest son Harry, a great favourite throughout the fortymile bush, where he was born and lived his life. Although a mere youth, he always took a great interest in military matters, and prior to leaving for the front was a lieutenant in the Territorials. Harry laid down his life on Gallipoli, and very soon after this! sad event another son and several former employees also gave up their lives in their country's interests. Matters are' now assuming normal- conditions once more, however, and it may interest patrons of the celebrated Tui ale and stout to know that scrupulous attention is paid to cleanliness, the sanitary environment is flawless, and there is evidence on every hand that the company are determined to maintain their reputation for 'highclass ale and stout. Mr. Robert Henderson is brewery manager, and Mr. H. Cowan managing director. An advertisement appears elsewhere in this issue.
