REMAINING SECTIONS

OUT-OF-DOOR ATTRACTIONS

It would be a mistake to assume that the whole show is given over to exhibits. There is alwaj-s a section of the public which cares but little for exhibitions of any sort. These must be, catered for, if a. satisfactory "gate" is to be secured. Each winter the Manawatu Association "stars" the Rugby contest between Te Aute and Wanganui Colleges, which always takes place on Wednesday afternoon. The match invariably provides a first-class exhibition of Eugby. In addition there is a number of excellent ring events, including a championship jump (Hunters' style). . If the weather is fine events of this nature always command a great deal of attention from the public. In recent years the dog trials have been added to the programme. An examination of the table published on this page will show that1 the entries for the various competitions were largest in the years 1914, 1915, and 1916.

A section for fat stock has been held on several occasions, but was not favoured with large enough entries to warrant a continuance. It has now given place to an exhibition, and a sale of pedigree stock which was instituted last year. Its success or failure depends upon the support accorded by breeders. Last year there were 100 entries; this year there are 200, and with the- co-oper-ation of various societies, prizes are offered. It will be readily seen that there are great possibilities in this pedigree section which may eventually attract buyers from all parts of the Dominion. Thus is a sphere of interest still further widened.

The photography section was extremely well patronised in 1913 when it was first included in the .schedule. The entries then totalled 114. In 1914 they went down to 63, and last year were only 26. ■ "

A .-section for deerheads was included in 1916, when these were 27 BeDaratfl.on.
