WHALE IN THE HARBOUR

On Saturday afternoon last a party out sailing in the yacht Bawene had a somewhat exciting time. When about a mile off Karaka Bay, what appeared to be an enormous log suddenly appeared a, few yards ahead, off the port bow. However, the "log" commenced to move, and. what seemed at first sight to be a small protectory branch resolved itself into the fluke of a whale, which headed straight for the side of the yacht. Luckily when \rithin about twelve feet, the whale dived right under the keel of the yacht, creating a tremendous swirl with its tail flukes, and missing the keel by a foot or two. The monster, which was well over thirty feet long, was not sighted again, much to the relief of the party on board, who expected every minute to get an undesirable rise in the world, with a cold sea bath to folloV. No doubt this was the same whale which was see* in the harbour a week ago.
