On behalf of men who were mobilised before the armistice, but did not actually go into camp—because the- enemy had collapsed—Mr. E. Newman; M.P., has requested an extension of the definition of "discharged soldier" for the purposes of the Repatriation Act. The Minister of Defence hats promised to refer this matter to the Repatriation Board.
To-day is the 50th anniversary of the massacre at White Cliffs, 30 miles from New Plymouth, by the Maoris of the Rev. John Whitelpy, aged 62; Lieutenant Bamber Gascoigne, aged 40; Mrs. Annie Gascoigne, aged 27; Cecil John Gascoigne, three years, and Louisa Annie Gascoigne, three months; John Milne, 40 years; and Edward Richards, 35 years.
Now that the war is over, it is considered by the Auckland Education Board that the exchange of teachers between New Zealand and other countries should be revived. In accordance with its approval of the idea, the board granted permission last night to a Morrinaville teacher, Miss M. Harper, to exchange with a Canadian teacher, subject to the iitipi-oval' of the thief inspec to^ . .. - -
