NEW ZEALAND RED CROSS

Mr. T. Young presided at the monthly meeting of tho Wellington Brunch of the N.Z. Red Cross Society, held yesterday afternoon at the Merccr-stroct Depot. There, was .a very...good ..attendance., .of committee members. A report was given of tho meeting of the Emergency Committee in January The sum of £100 was voted, for hospital comforts, to be expended as usual by Mrs. M. Myers. For vocational training £50 was voted. It was considered that all the hospitals, in tho district would call, for special work from tho committee, and it was stated that a special committee of ladies had been set up to visit regularly and find out what was needed',in each'case. Miss Nathan, hon. secretary, had obtained permission from General Henderson for matrons of the various hospitals to state the needs without any further formalities, thus avoiding loss" of time. It was resolved to grant the matron at Miramar £30 per month (as at Lowry Bay) for extras to supplement tho government allowance. A final payment oi £87 9s 7d was received from the Red Cross ShopCommittee. The election of officers will take place on 31st March, and the choice of a, representative on tho N.Z. Council was to bo left to the incoming committee. Many gratifying letters of thanks were received with much pleasure by the committee, these having come from various overseas directions. , The report of }he Hospital Comfort* Committee of the N.Z. Red Cross in England was also read It showed that on 12th November, 1918, there were in tha British hospitals 71 officers and 1931 men, and in tho New Zealand hospitals 20V officers and 5673 men. The report stated that the supplies of plum cake (such aa has not been seen in England for years), jam, . butter, honey, biscuits, tongue's, etc.. sont from Now Zealand were of inestimable value, as the majority of British hospitals had been very strictly rationed," and New Zealand soldiers used to the rations in Now Zealand hospitals felt the shortage of food. The statement of receipts and expenditure of the London Committee for October, 1918, showed receipts totalling £28,252 5s 4d, including £2805 9s lOd brought forward, and an expenditure of £701 4s 3d A letter was received., from Mrs. Bodsu and Miss Phoebe Myers, asking. for assistance for tho Crippled Soldiers' Hostel It stated that £10,000 was needed to erect a suitable building. A sub-oommitteo,, consisting of Mre. W S. Moorhouec, Miss Nathan, and Messrs. T Young, Bush, and Veitch, was appointed to go into the matter. Tho meeting was of opinion that the work was a valuable one.
