UNSTAMPED SCALES
Robert Cashman, Inspector of Weights and Measures, proceeded against the Champion Confectionery Company, Ltd., Tasman-street, to-day on an information alleging that an unstamped weighingmachine had been used in the factory. Mr. M. Myers, who appeared for tho defence, admitted that the weighingmachine produced was unstamped and had been used in the factory, but procecdod to call witnesses to show that the machine had been used merely for rough weighingof ingredients, a,nd not for selling purposes. The Act was merely framed to prevent fraud. ,
Mr. J. ProndeviHe, of the Crown. JLaw Office, far the prosecution, quoted a section of the Act which stated that anyone using unstamped scales was liable to prosecution. . Mr. F. V. Prazer, S.M., after referring' to the Act, said that the intention of the provision set forth was probably in. between the t*o contentions. A housewife's scales were used only for tho making-up of articles intended for tho house, but those in question were used in premises where goods were manufactured for'eale, and though they were used as a general rule in the making- of the articles to be sold, there was a. chance that they might be used in the packing room as well. On the suggestion of Mr. Myers the Magistrate, who said that he was satisfied the case for the prosecution had been proved, dismissed the' information as trivial, and made no order for the confiscation of the sqales on the undorstandinj? that the law would be complied with a* soon as possible.
