LONDON, Ist October.

Major M. E. Makgill-Crichton-Mait-land, D.5.0., Grenadier Guards, is temporary Lieutenant-Colonel, commanding a Provisional battalion. ' /'

The N.Z.E.F. has recently granted honorary captain's commissions to Mr. A. Pearce and Mr. G. E. Butler, two wellknown artist*. Captains Pearce and Butler are at present at the front getting material for war pictures. The former was in pfew Zealand as artist for the Sphere with the Duke and Duchess of York on thejr royal tour, and has done a number of pictures of the King from life. He was also commissioned to sketch the coronation. Mr. Butler belongs to Wellington, but has lived at Bristol for a number of years, and many canvases from his brush have been hung on the walls of the Academy. He recently painted an official picture for the city of Bristol.

Sapper J. F. Cadigan, N.Z.E., has been discharged in England as medically unfit.

Lieutenant A. E. W Salt, Manchester, Regiment, formerly sergeant N.Z.M.C, has lately been employed on the Staff (Cl F.F.). He has now relinquished that appointment, and with it the temporay rank of captain.

The N.Z.E.F. is having a return prepared showing the names of all,medical students who have passed the intermediate examination, the object being to second them for continuation of. their studies. i

Captain J. B. Hine, Wellington Mounted Rifles, has rejoined on Teturning from New Zealand. Lieutenant Kose becomes quartermaster at . the training units and depots in Egypt. The following officers from the Camel Corps are transferred to the units named : Major J. B. Davis and Lieutenant P. 0: Rose, to -W.M-.R. ■ Major H. 0. Hemphill and Captain G. F. Yerex to the A.M.R. ; Lieutenants R. F. Mackenzie, M;C, C. E. Mawer, C. R. M. Gorringe, A. GeoTgetti, ancl H V B. Speight, 2nd Lieutenants F G. Ikeweek, ;'E. A. Boscawen, J. W Burland, J': Duncan, and W D. Wilson, to the Machine Gun Corps; Lieutenants A. J. Black and G. R. Western to the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. \

Lieutenant I. W. Cowie and Second Lieutenant D. P Reardon have been taken on the strength of the N.Z. Field Artillery.

Second Lieutenant G-. Morpeth, R.F.A:, has been transferred to the N.Z.F.A.;, Before being nominated, in January, 1917, for an Imperial commission, he was a corporal in the Auckland Regiment. • *»

Captain J. W Smeaton has relinquished the appointment'of adjutant to jjie 3rd Brigade, N.Z.F.A;, on account of sickness, and is succeeded by Lieutenant R. F. Vial, who has been orderly officer. Captain R. M'Pherson, M.C., has aJso reJinquished the! appointment of adjutant to the Reserve Depot, also on account of sicknsss. ■

Captain 0. Opie, R.N.Z.A., is promoted major in place of Major F. M. Turner, M.C., who goes as chief instructor at the Reserve Depot. Captain Opie is seconded for duty iis G. 5.0., 3, .N.Z. Division. T.-Major A. B. Williams is promoted major in place of Captain Opie, promoted

Owing to Major. T.'JFarr, M.C., R.N.Z.A., and Major R. C. Wickens, D.5.0., R.N.Z.A., being seconded for duty to New Zealand, Captains A. H. W. Evenden andvW. M. Geddes, M.C., are promoted. .

The following • lieutenants in the N.Z.F.A. are promoted captain: E. W; Pearce, B. A. Todd, J. E. L. Gardner. M.C., F. J. W. Stallard, M.C., and J. M. T. Downey.

Sergeant E. S. Smith, 2/941, is commissioned as 2nd lieutenant in the Artillery Captain N. Annabell, M.C., has relinquished the appointment as adjutant to Divisional Engineers, and is promoted major.

Major H. M. Edwards, D.5.0., Royal Engineers, who has been with the New Zealand' Signal Services ever since Gallipoli, where he was promoted brevetmajor, has now rejoined the British Army. Major H. C. Mackenzie, M.C., is appointed to command the Signal Services in his place. Lieutenant G. S. Collyns, M.C., is transferred' from the Tunnelling Company to the Otago Regiment. ,

Lieutenant T. J. Gordon, p.C.M., is transferred from the Canterbury to {.he Auckland-Regiment.

Captain H. E. Burrell, Auckland Regi T ment, is attached to Divisional Headquarters as area officer. Second Lieutenant | J. Vincent, D.C.M., M.M., Canterbury Regiment, is appointed brigade signalling officer to the 4th (Reserve) Brigade in place gf, 2nd Lieutenant R. Simmers, M.M., Otago Regiment, who is proceeding overseas. Captain H. Johnston, M.C., who has been commanding a company of the 3rd Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, is appointed to a similar command in a, composite reserve battalion.

Lieutenant J. M. Barton, M.C., platoon commander Ipf the 3rd Auckland Regiment, is appointed a company commander, and 2nd Lieutenant P. S. Crisp becomes a platoon commander. j Captain J. B. Le Mottee, Canterbury | . Regiment, who has been commanding ah entrenching battalion, has relinquished that post. ■;. ' Lieutenant M. R. Walker 1, M.C., adju-ji 'tant to the 2nd Canterbury Battalion] ahd Lieutenant W P. Hill, adjutant, are promoted captains. Lieutenant H. V. Gerred, Canterbnry Regiment, is promoted captain and seconded as an instructor at the 22nd Infantry School. Lieutenant L. B. Hutton, of the same\ regiment, is promoted captain.

2nd Lieutenants J. L. Hardy, A. A. Marryatt, W G. Cain, and C. Quartley are promoted to be lieutenants in the Canterbury Regiment.

Sergeant H. Perry, 6/1196, Canterbury Regiment, is promoted 2nd lieutenant. He is on special service.

Captain P. A. Keddell, Canterbury Regiment, is a temporary major while acting as commandant 22nd Corps Reception Gamp.

The following officers of the Canterbury Regiment have been acting as company commanders in an entrenching battalion, but have now returned to their units. Lieutenants J. F. O'Leary, G. M. Lucas, and W. Korner.

2nd Lieutenant L. A. M orison is taken on the strength of the Otago Regiment.

Lieutenant T. H. Sissons, Otago Regiment, who has been a platoon commander, is ''proceeding overseas.

Lieutenant A. R, Cockerell, D.5.0.. has been acting as adjutant to the Ist Battalion Otago Regiment.

2nd Lieutenants E, H. Walcott and K. J. M'Kenzie, Ofagb Regiment, are promoted lieutenants.

Lieutenant C. B. M'Clure, M.C., Otago Regiment, is promoted temp, cap tain.

Lieutenant, D. Q. O'Brien, Wellington Regiment, and 2nd Lieutenants B. Tangnev and B. Gibbons, R. 8., are transferred to the Rarotongan Company. Lieutenant H. F. Meikie. N.Z.S.C., is proceeding to New Zealand on duty.

Captain L. T. Herbert. Wellington Regiment, has been appointed officer-in-charge of divisional, canteens, in placo of Captnin A. Jackson, N.Z.11.J8., killed ia *etion.
